Alcohol marketing as a commercial determinant of health

In this article, the researchers used daily diary data from ‘The Onward Project on Wellbeing and Adversity,’ a multi-component prospective cohort study examining the pathways of adverse mental health conditions among 300 women aged 18 to 24 living in the Kampala slums in Uganda. The researchers found the women’s daily diaries showed that alcohol-related neighborhood features were most frequently reported, including bars, people drinking alcohol, alcohol selling points, and alcohol advertising on TV. They also found that women who were exposed to bars and alcohol ads on billboards in a day and every day were more likely to report alcohol use. The researchers called for alcohol counter-marketing strategies and harm reduction approaches to address unregulated alcohol marketing.
