Harms to children from men’s heavy drinking: A scoping review

Alcohol and drugs

In this article, researchers found that children experience direct and indirect harms from men’s drinking. Direct harms include disinhibition, aggression, and physical assault. Indirect harms included men being absent and emotionally unavailable due to drinking. They found that poverty, cultural norms and patriarchal influences exacerbated harm to children from men’s drinking. The researchers concluded that men’s drinking led to family conflict, maltreatment and emotional distress in children.
